With the Internet at large, the world has become so much bigger. Our range of socialization has widened and human connection is no longer limited to physical circumstance. While some may argue digitization has interfered with empathy, this certainly wasn’t the case for Jennifer and David. In the sea of names, faces, interests, taglines and hashtags, online dating created a situation in which two people who might have never met in their day-to-day context held a conversation. And from there – well, we’ll tell you all about it.

Jennifer and David shared New York roots, political backgrounds, and pizza. Soon to be many pizzas, they also decided to share their lives along the Anacostia River, at the waterfront legend of District Winery. Despite meeting online, the couple was also mutually employed as congressional staffers -- if one couldn't guess when Congressman Emanuel Cleaver arrived to officiate the ceremony.

We’ve raved about District Winery in the past, and we feel confident emphasizing again that you really can’t go wrong with this classy and modern venue. Before entering, the wedding party captured gorgeous portraits at the dock and Navy Yard, showing off their sweet bouquets in the bright air. Jennifer and her bridesmaids clutched handfuls of blush garden roses, spray roses, and various ivory shades of peonies and hydrangeas.

The prelude to the ceremony was a romantic trail of greenery winding up the staircase. District Winery’s intimate and sophisticated demeanor, expressed through gleaming dark wood and accents, turned forest during the couple’s ascent. The open rooftop terrace unfolded to reveal a copper chuppah draped in silk and smilax vines with a beautiful view of the skyline. Overflowing bushes of smilax, eucalyptus, peonies, roses, snapdragon, foraged dogwood, and textured greenery foliage adorned either side of the chuppah, framed by rustic wine barrels with their own floral halos: a truly picturesque union.

The stunning chuppah was a hard act to follow, but the reception was just as whimsical. The couple chose extended family style seating, taking full advantage of District Winery’s handsome handcrafted walnut tables. Hinged test tube bud vases with antiqued gold finish cradled the delicate peach and blush florals, introducing a unique vintage element to the centerpieces. Number cards sketched with DC monuments reminded guests of Jennifer and David’s love of the capitol and nation’s history. The head table included gilt vases of garden style arrangements of blush peonies, hydrangeas, roses, stock flower, and textured greenery foliage, with floating candles in stemmed glassware. A dreamy cake of pink and gold swirls, rose-dappled and effulgent above mercury glass votives, was a magnificent sight.

In the last light of a beautiful day, Jennifer and David found a pocket of quiet on the balcony. They took in the view beneath a sky they’d both known long before they knew each other, waiting for this moment in which their sightline aligned.
