Gelila & Zewerede | National Museum of Women in the Arts Wedding | Washington, DC

Gelila and Zewerede chose to consecrate their marriage in a sacred space where they could “borrow” the purity of Christ, suspended above their union in a perfect blue-skyed fresco. The Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church recognizes that beauty is fundamental to understanding God’s love of creation and the ornate interior exquisitely expressed the joy of the couple’s initiation of life together.

Haloed by stained glass, Gelila and Zewerde each bore a ceremonial crown solidifying their roles as King and Queen of the new household. Saints oversaw the proceedings, celestial attendees in this merging of many worlds: physical, emotional, spiritual.

'Orthodox’ translates to “true praise”, a theme that winds seamlessly into a sacred space of another nature: The National Museum of Women in the Arts, selected to be the couple's Washington DC wedding venue. Twin themes of overcoming social adversity and achieving an eternal legacy link the energy of church and museum.

At the head table, the couple clinked shining champagne flutes arranged on velvet taupe linens. A silhouette of candlelit monet glasses sprawled across the table like a mountain ridge sunrise.

Illuminated by alcoves of light, guests partook in a shared meal reminiscent of another iconic mystical supper. Greenery splashed down in delicate curls in the candle wall, connecting nature with society. A single rose head dozed on every napkin in invitation to join this holy garden of heaven, earth, and love.

Beneath the intimate lighting, florals seemed to glow with a baroque nuance. The coral, ivory and peach color scheme brought a certain delicateness to the impact of a striking black wedding cake. Garden roses and spray roses nestled with Salal and Italian ruscus stood dramatically in gold vases.
